Students, schools and our state are in danger. Michigan’s economic situation and the state government’s inability to deal with it have caused significant funding challenges in K-12 education and economists predict continued cuts in the next few years.
The challenges schools are facing:
• Largest funding reductions in history.
• As of last June, there were 41 school districts in deficit, or bankrupt. There are many more schools teetering on the financial edge.
• Reductions in student populations – approximately 30,000 per year fewer students due to natural demographics and residents moving out of the state.
• If nothing is done to address funding issues, the 2010-11 budget will be even worse.
• Expectations for education are being raised – and educators want to meet them.
Michigan’s Economy:
• Highest unemployment rate in the U.S. at 15.2%
• Employment has declined for eight consecutive years.
• Drop of 8.3% in 2009; 4.6% projected for 2010.
• Sales, income, and property taxes are all down.
Concerned parents and citizens throughout the state are beginning to work together through a SOS – Save our Students, Schools and State network. Their mission has three general goals:
1. Promote replacing the current funding system with one that’s equitable and provides stable funding sources.
2. Help local districts become more efficient and effective, including promoting changes in existing laws and regulations, developing and supporting processes for self evaluation, and exploring different approaches to managing schools and educating students.
3. Help local districts work within their communities to develop a SOS grassroots network of supporters who can help facilitate change.
