The Manistee, Wexford-Missaukee Regional Math/Science Center is one of the 33 regional centers in the State of Michigan's Math/Science Center Network. These centers provide leadership, curriculum support, professional development, and student services to educators in local school districts. The centers also serve as a resource clearinghouse for education materials and information, and work to foster community involvement in the areas of math and science. The Math/Science Center Network supports the delivery of high quality mathematics and science education for students of Michigan.
The Manistee, Wexford-Missaukee Regional Mathematics and Science Center serves the students, schools, and communities of the Manistee and Wexford-Missaukee ISD service areas. The center provides support in Mathematics, Science and environmental curriculum support. The support is provided by Section 99 funds through State School Aid.
The funding for the center has forced several changes within the last year. Due to declining funds, the Chittenden Center use was discontinued. But both Manistee and Wexford-Missaukee ISDs have stepped in to keep some service through the center. Most of the Science materials are housed at Wexford-Missaukee ISD and the Math at Manistee ISD. Currently, we are putting the materials in kits to support specific curriculum standard concepts. The kits are being developed to enable schools to check them out for alignment with specific units of instruction.
Each ISD is providing Math and Science Professional Development for the local districts and developing a student project component. The Center is also participating in the Michigan Math Leadership Academy which provides additional professional development. The center is also developing a partnership with the National Science Teachers Association through the "Building a Presence Program."
The Manistee Regional Math Science Center Fiscal Agent is Wexford-Missaukee ISD and the Directorship of the Center is being shared by Karen Mlcek, Director of General Education, Wexford-Missaukee ISD and Kay Sayler, Education Consultant, Manistee ISD.
